環境学部 環境経営システム学科 4年 胡 キンキ
During the summer vacation of 2023, through university screening, I was honored to have the opportunity to study at Edith Cowan University in Perth, Australia for 6 weeks, and spent a lifetime that I will never forget here with my university partners. Perth is on the western coast of Australia, it is a vibrant city known for its excellent educational institutions, multicultural environment, and breathtaking natural landscapes. I have learned a lot of culture, knowledge, and skills that have been beneficial to me for a lifetime here. Next, I will share my learning experience here through this article.
About my first week in Australia Perth. We took a flight for over ten hours and arrived in Australia on August 5th last Saturday. I was arranged in the family of a high school teacher with two lovely dogs, and the daily study in Edith Cowan University began on August 7th this Monday.
I was very excited that I have ever been, because I live here with many other countries in my homestay such as Australian, Japanese, Arabs. We have composed a new family and started a new life. Homestay provides a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in the local culture. Living with a host family exposes you to everyday life, customs, traditions, and local perspectives that you might not experience in other accommodation options. Honestly I feel really delighted that I have this chance to live in the homestay. I made many friends in Australia, we talk our lifestyle, our country’s culture, anything you like with each other. Through our conversations, I knew a lot about the information and spiritual connotations of many different countries, allowing me to discover different aspects of the world and have different opinions and perspectives on many things.. And also homestay offers an authentic experience of daily life in the host country. I’ll get to experience local routines, foods, and activities that may not be as accessible in other types of accommodations. I have got much fun from it, this makes my life colorful without ennui. The most important of living in homestay greatly improved my language skills during this process. I think constant exposure to English conversations in real-life situations can accelerate my language learning and boost my confidence in speaking and understanding the language. I believe that the future is a world committed to international development, the countries need to strengthen connections and cooperate with each other in order to promote and better develop. I want to do my part in building bridges between countries in the future, so It is actually significant to my future development.
The studying in university is awesome as well. In the first week of class learning, the members of our MEXT group had discussed with teachers about Australia's lifestyle, environment, culture, and a lot of interesting things. Through the communication, I am filled with expectations for my future life in Perth, and my spoken English has become increasingly fluent. The teachers are very friendly and humorous. We are like friends discussing various topics, such as Australia's views, food, and some controversial social phenomena. We get along very well, and often laugh heartily at the classroom. I pretty love the teachers here. Then, I often use my spare time after class to visit the university. The university typically has state-of-the-art facilities, including libraries, laboratories, research centers, and technology resources, ensuring you have access to the tools you need to excel. It also offers comprehensive support services to assist international students with various aspects of university life, including academic advising, counseling, career services, and language support. The university has a variety of student organizations, clubs, and societies that cater to different interests. I played the ping-pong and billiards in the village that other students have lived in, I made a lot of friends there. So I think joining these groups is a great way to make friends, engage in extracurricular activities, and enhance our university experience.
In the second week, our 5-person class welcomed many international students, and we formed a new large class for further learning. Collaborating with students from various countries in group projects has been an enriching experience for me. It has not only expanded my academic knowledge but also broadened my horizons in many other ways.
Firstly, studying with international classmates has exposed me to diverse perspectives and approaches to problem-solving. Each member of our group brings a unique cultural background and educational experience, which often leads to innovative and well-rounded solutions. This diversity fosters creativity and critical thinking, challenging me to see problems from different angles. Moreover, communication skills have played a pivotal role in my group learning experience. Since my peers come from various linguistic backgrounds, effective communication has been essential in ensuring everyone understands the task at hand. Learning to bridge language barriers and express ideas clearly has been a valuable skill that I have developed. Another aspect that I've enjoyed is the opportunity to learn about different educational systems and teaching styles. Through discussions with my international peers, I've gained insights into the strengths and weaknesses of various approaches to education. This has allowed me to reflect on my own learning style and adapt it to be more versatile and effective. Furthermore, the friendships formed during group study sessions have been one of the most rewarding aspects of this experience. Building connections with people from around the world has expanded my social network, and I've learned about different cultures, traditions, and ways of life. These friendships have also provided me with a support system that has been crucial in navigating the challenges of studying abroad. Finally, Although the team work, it has enhanced my academic and interpersonal skills, exposed me to diverse perspectives, and allowed me to form meaningful friendships with people from around the world. I am grateful for the opportunity to be part of such a global learning community.
In the third week, we started to learn the reading summary. When I first started learning this skill, I often felt anxious when faced with a large amount of article content. However, under the guidance of my teacher, I gradually mastered the method of disassembling and analyzing articles, and also learned how to write a good summary. Through this week's study and practice, I have gained many benefits from it. Reading comprehension skills are a crucial competency that holds significant importance not only during the course of one's academic journey but also in various facets of everyday life. For example, When it comes to education, reading comprehension plays an indispensable role in boosting academic performance. Students who excel at comprehending written materials tend to excel in exams and assignments. And also, students, particularly those in higher education, often engage in independent research, necessitating extensive reading. Proficiency in reading comprehension assists them in extracting and organizing crucial information to support their research endeavors. Especially, for international students and language learners, improving reading comprehension skills is instrumental in enhancing language proficiency. It aids in vocabulary expansion, comprehension of grammatical structures, and the overall fluency in the language. It also has the advantages to time management. Reading comprehension skills also contribute to efficient time management as students can quickly identify the essential elements of texts, thereby saving valuable study time.
On the other hand, in everyday life, we are inundated with an abundance of information. Elevating reading comprehension skills equips individuals with the ability to discern valuable information and engage in critical thinking, which is essential for making informed decisions. Through reading and summarizing, individuals have the opportunity to acquire a diverse range of knowledge, fostering personal growth. This allows them to cultivate interests, acquire skills, and broaden their horizons. And then, in the professional realm, adept reading comprehension skills enable individuals to comprehend industry trends, market dynamics, and competitor analysis, facilitating strategic decision-making and career success. The most important thing is that proficiency in reading comprehension enables individuals to better understand and appreciate others' opinions and perspectives, contributing to the development of robust interpersonal relationships and effective communication.
Therefore, enhancing reading comprehension skills holds immense significance in both the pursuit of education and everyday life. In an educational context, it promotes academic success, research acumen, and language proficiency. In daily life, it facilitates information retrieval, critical thinking, personal development, career advancement, and enhanced communication skills. Therefore, the improvement of reading comprehension skills not only contributes to academic excellence but also leads to a more fulfilling and successful life. It is a crucial skill that has far-reaching implications throughout one's entire career.
On the fourth week, we learned about the listening summary. It is also useful for our future studying and life. Listening comprehension is a skill that often goes overlooked but plays a pivotal role in both our academic pursuits and daily life. One of the primary reasons listening comprehension is crucial in education is its direct impact on academic success. Students who can actively listen and comprehend lectures and classroom discussions tend to perform better in exams and assignments. Listening actively also helps students grasp complex concepts more easily. It's an essential component of the learning process, enabling students to understand, retain, and apply knowledge effectively. For language learners, listening comprehension is key to improving pronunciation, vocabulary, and fluency. It exposes them to native speakers' accents and nuances, aiding in language acquisition. And then, Actively listening in the classroom encourages students to participate in discussions, ask questions, and engage with their peers and teachers, fostering a more dynamic and interactive learning environment. Through listening, students gain access to diverse perspectives and ideas, which can stimulate critical thinking and open-mindedness, both essential for higher education.
In our daily lives, listening comprehension is fundamental for effective communication. Firstly, being a good listener makes us better friends, partners, and colleagues, as it demonstrates respect and empathy for others' thoughts and feelings. Secondly, listening actively is also a crucial skill in resolving conflicts. It enables us to understand the root causes of disagreements and find mutually acceptable solutions. In the professional world, those who can listen carefully and understand instructions, client needs, and colleagues' perspectives are more likely to excel and advance in their careers. Then, listening to others' experiences and stories can be incredibly enriching. It broadens our horizons, exposes us to new ideas, and helps us continuously learn and grow as individuals. At last, good listening fosters better relationships. It makes people feel valued and heard, strengthening personal connections and contributing to overall happiness.
Therefore, listening comprehension is an invaluable skill that significantly impacts both our educational journey and our quality of life. In academia, it facilitates learning, enhances academic success, and aids language development. In daily life, it forms the foundation for effective communication, conflict resolution, career advancement, personal growth, and nurturing meaningful relationships. Recognizing its significance and actively working to improve this skill can lead to a more fulfilling and successful life.
On the fifth week, we had a summary exam. At the beginning of that, I though it is not hard for me to finish it. However, as the exams approach, there's often a mixture of determination and anxiety. The need to achieve a certain score can be daunting, leading to intensive study sessions and test preparation. I spent a lot of time reviewing the skills that the teacher has told us. On the day of the exam, nervousness is almost inevitable. The pressure to perform well and meet the requirements for admission to the desired university can be overwhelming.. During the exam, you may face challenging questions and tasks that test your language skills to the limit. This can be frustrating but also an opportunity to demonstrate your abilities. Because this English exams are timed, which can create additional stress. As a result, managing your time effectively during the test is crucial to completing all sections. After completing the exam, there's often a sense of relief. The hard work and preparation have paid off, and you've successfully completed a significant step toward your study abroad journey.
Anyway, I think I have done my best to successfully complete this exam, and I think I should have a good score. The experience of preparing for and taking English proficiency exams for studying abroad is filled with a range of emotions. While it can be challenging, it is also a rewarding journey that opens doors to new opportunities, personal growth, and cultural enrichment. The sense of accomplishment when you achieve your goals makes the effort and hard work worthwhile.
On the sixth week, it is the last week for us. I will return Japan after my short study abroad adventure in Perth has been a profound and emotional journey. The range of feelings I've experienced is both exhilarating and challenging, offering me a unique perspective on life and personal growth. I find myself caught in a whirlwind of mixed emotions. On one hand, I'm excited to reunite with my family, reconnect with old friends, and embrace the familiarity of home. On the other, I can't help but feel a sense of nostalgia for the incredible experiences, places, and friendships I left behind abroad. Nostalgia hits me hard. I often find myself reminiscing about the enchanting foreign landscapes, the bustling markets, and the delicious street food I savored during my time overseas. It's as if a part of my heart still lingers in those distant places. Returning Japan has brought with it an unexpected challenge called reverse culture shock. The routines and expectations of Japan feel foreign to me now. I catch myself struggling with simple things I once took for granted. Especially, having studied in a non-native language environment, transitioning back to my native language can be disorienting. I notice myself occasionally slipping into foreign phrases or struggling to find the right words. Expressing myself with the same fluency as before takes effort. And my study abroad experience has left me with career dilemmas too. I'm torn between pursuing a career path that aligns with my international experiences and finding opportunities in my home country. Deciding how to integrate my newfound global knowledge into my career is a puzzle I'm working to solve. In a word, studying abroad has widened my perspective and deepened my appreciation for diversity. I now approach differences in culture, thought, and perspective with more curiosity and empathy. This newfound understanding enriches my interactions with people from all walks of life. Above all, I'm overwhelmed with gratitude. Grateful for the chance to explore the world, to learn from different cultures, and to grow as an individual. The people I met, the lessons I learned, and the memories I made abroad have left an indelible mark on my life.

Then, Perth is home to a thriving Asian community, offering a wide range of Asian culinary delights. I sampled delicious dishes from China, Japan, Thailand, and Indonesia. Whether it was the spicy Thai stir-fried noodles, fresh sushi, or aromatic Indian curries, I embarked on an Asian culinary journey that tantalized my taste buds. By the way, Perth's coffee culture is irresistible. I discovered unique and quality coffee shops throughout the city. Sipping on lattes, cappuccinos, and cold brews, I enjoyed the rich flavors and relaxed ambiance of Perth's coffee scene.
